Dr. Mallen uses a method of chiropractic care known as the Gonstead System. Dr. Clarence Gonstead, who built an enormous practice in a small town in Wisconsin, developed this methodology. Dr. Gonstead specialized in treating patients who had failed to get results from other chiropractors.
His methods included using weight-bearing (standing ) full spine x-rays along with instrumentation, to determine the key segments in a patient’s spine that needed correction. He developed precise adjusting methods that are more biomechanically effective. Dr. Mallen has had extensive training in the Gonstead System. Your muscular system includes material called myofascia. This is the whitish membrane that you would see when removing the skin from raw chicken. It is connective tissue. In our muscles, it wraps around each muscle fiber, each bundle of fibers, and the entire muscle. Fascia holds the muscle together.
Injuries to muscles cause damage to the fascia and development of scar tissue, much like the gristle in a piece of beef. Often there is the appearance of “knots” in the injured tissue. These are localized areas of muscle spasm called trigger points. They are often painful and can radiate pain to other areas of the body.
We use myofascial trigger point therapy to address these problems. Examples of this are techniques such as ischemic compression, where pressure is applied to the trigger points in a way that relieves the spasm. Often this takes repeated treatments. Other methods involve targeted stretching of the muscle while pressure is simultaneously applied. Trigger point therapy is an effective adjunct to specific chiropractic adjustments. It helps the body recover from accidents and injuries. Patients usually are given instructions for postural improvements and home exercises which help recovery and prevent relapse.
